Repayment Options
Your loan repayment start date depends on the type of loan you borrowed. You are required to begin making payments on time, even if you have not received a payment notice or statement from your loan holder. If you do not receive a payment notice, request one from your loan holder immediately.
Subsidized and unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan borrowers are eligible for a six-month grace period, beginning the day after you stop attending school at least half time. The first payment is due within 60 days after your grace period ends. Although you are not required to make payments during your grace period, it is a good idea to do so if you are able.
Federal PLUS borrowers' first payment is generally due within 60 days after the loan is fully disbursed. However, graduate and professional student PLUS borrowers may request an immediate in-school deferment. Additionally, for loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 2008, parent PLUS borrowers may request to postpone their payments while the student is attending school at least half time. It is wise for PLUS borrowers to make interest payments after the loan's first disbursement and during periods of deferment.
