Draft Optimal Entry-level Competencies and Feedback Form

The documents below are the work product of the Curriculum Alignment Initiative’s (CAI) Engineering and Information Technology Discipline Workgroups. These workgroups were charged with developing optimal entry competencies for professional practice fields to ensure that students have an accurate understanding of the competencies needed for their chosen careers. Please see the main CAI page or the June 2008 CAI Report for a further description of the discipline workgroup and competencies definitions. We encourage those new to the work of the CAI to familiarize themselves with the information on our main page before submitting comments.

MDHE would like to extend its thanks and gratitude to the participants in the Engineering and Information Technology Discipline workgroups, particularly the discipline workgroup liaisons. All have devoted much time and effort in generating these optimal competencies.

Optimal Competencies

The drafts posted here are the optimal entry competencies for certain professional practice fields and should be layered on top of the minimal entry-level competencies to get an accurate understanding of the competencies needed for careers in particular fields.

Recognizing the need for Missouri students to have adequate preparation in the Math, Engineering, Technology, and Science fields, optimal competencies were developed to outline requirements in certain careers for students in the pipeline.  The optimal entry-level competencies are reflective of coursework that is more rigorous than the minimal entry-level competencies for access to beginning collegiate-level general education coursework.

Engineering and Informational Technology faculty and educators throughout the state developed these competencies for optimal entry into the Engineering and Engineering/Information Technology fields. Please refer to the Discipline Workgroup Participants link for a list of discipline workgroup participants and institutions.
Included are optimal competencies for the following areas:

  • Engineering
  • Engineering and Information Technology
  • Mathematics

Context

The context for the status and intent of the draft optimal competencies:

  • Optimal competencies are not meant to reflect minimum entry level competencies into collegiate coursework. These competencies represent specific skill sets that students will need to possess prior to entering particular career fields, especially METS-related fields.
  • These documents are in draft form; they are intended to facilitate feedback and dialogue, and may be subject to revision—they are not in their final form.
  • Public constituents and CAI participants are encouraged to provide feedback and submit comments for review by the appropriate discipline workgroups.

Instructions for Public Comment
Thank you very much for your willingness to comment on the optimal entry-level competencies. It is critical that these competences are reviewed and feedback provided, as they have the potential to impact curriculum and instruction at the secondary and postsecondary level across Missouri institutions.

The public comment period for the optimal entry-level draft competencies will last through October 31, 2008. When commenting on the public drafts, please indicate the optimal entry-level draft competency document you are referring to or if the comment is a general one. You may use the comment form below or may email the department directly to comment at he-cai@dhe.mo.gov.

Thank you for your feedback and contribution to optimal preparation of Missouri students.
