JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Members of the Coordinating Board for Higher Education (CBHE), along with its college presidential advisory committee, met Thursday on the campus of Linn State Technical College to further develop a coordinated plan for higher education in the state.

Building on the framework adopted at the group's last meeting, engaged discussion continued toward creating a dynamic plan that would effectively express the goals of Missouri's higher education system, track progress, and work for the long-term betterment of our citizens and the state's economy. The plan includes three major strategic initiatives:

  • Increasing Educational Attainment
  • Developing a 21st Century Society and Global Economy
  • Enhancing Resources through increased investment, stewardship, and responsibility

With ongoing and significant participation from Missouri's postsecondary institutions, the goals and indicators established in the coordinated plan will produce a clear set of statewide expectations with a commitment to demonstrating the value of higher education. At its scheduled June meeting, the board will receive recommendations for operational measures and indicators of progress for review and action. Once completed, the plan will serve as a planning guide for Missouri's higher education system for the next three to five years.

In a separate agenda item, the coordinating board also received a progress update from the Higher Education Funding (HEF) task force. The multi-year business plan currently under development by the task force outlines investment strategies for higher education. Strategies address maintaining quality and opportunity through funding the core mission of our institutions, implementing strategic initiatives to improve quality and expand service, and implementing performance funding to reward quality and results. Final funding recommendations will be presented to the board in June.

The CBHE meets five times per year at locations throughout the state. The next meeting is scheduled for June 12, 2008, at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Board books and official meeting minutes may be found on the MDHE Website at
